Paul Carl Wilhelm Schumann was born on the 5th of November 1881 in Bundes-Straße
50, Hamburg, Germany on a rainy day. His mother, Hanchen, wrote that on 16 March
1897 he passed his examinations and on 18 March began working in the office of an
orphanage as a trainee. His beginning salary was 500 Reichmarks but improved annually.
She later wrote that on the 1st of October 1900 he arrived at Altona with the 31st
regiment, so he must have been inducted into the army not long after his job at the
orphanage.
Reinhold Carl Henry Schumann was born on the 6th of November 1886 in Bundes-
Straße 50, Hamburg, Germany on Sunday at 5 PM. For some unknown reason Reinhold
Carl Henry Schumann was given the English name Henry, rather than the German
version Heinrich. Reinhold's mother, Hanchen, wrote that he attended the
Uhlenhorster secondary school. They chose this school because he often suffered
from throat problems and the school was near their new apartment on Winterhudet-
Weg
Fritz Schumann was born on the 10th of December 1899 in Heitmann-Straße 8,
Hamburg, Germany and baptized on the 4th of April 1900. In her journal Fritz's
mother, Hanchen, says he was her seventh son, although she mentions only five by
name. She sometimes called him Fritz and sometimes Friedel. It is possible his name
was actually Friedrich.
Fritz was born rather late, when his eldest brother was 21 years old. As is often the
case with such children he was rather spoiled. One sees this is his mother's writings,
where she often described him as the light of their life, and she says they moved to
another apartment with a nice garden so Fritz could play in the fresh air. She
recorded all sort of details about Fritz, but not about her other children. For example:
She mentioned that Friedel got his first tooth in November 1900 and that he could
walk alone at 14 months of age.
When Fritz was 14 years old he left home and was not heard of again, except for a brief
letter to his brother Hans. Fritz wrote that he was ashamed to write to his mother
and she should not be told that he was in jail in Hawaii.
Hanchen Kröger wrote that her father, Hans Kröger, was born on 9th of January
1821 in Schleswig, Germany. As a young journeyman mason he travelled and
worked extensively in Russia. Later he came to Hamburg and established a
business before he married on the 28th of January 1855. Through industry and moral
strength his business prospered.
Willi Koch was the brother of Elsbeth Koch who married Willi Schumann. Willi Koch
married (1) Hildegard and (2) Irmgard.
Willie Koch and his brother Albert went to German South West Africa, (now called
Namibia). Willi was a master stone mason and he formed a construction company.
He obtain many, if not most, of the government building contracts in Windhoek and
became very wealthy. According to his niece once removed Antje Schumann, he was
mayor of Windhoek.
Willie's wife Hildegard, aka Hilda, could not have children. They adopted the
illegitimate child named Elsbeth, known as Betty. Betty's mother Irmgard was the
daughter of a Methodist Minister in Hannover. Germany, who banished her to German
Southwest Africa to have her illegitimate baby. As her dying wish Hildegard told Willi
Betty needed a mother and asked Willi to find Betty's biological mother and marry her
as his second wife. Albert searched until he found Irmgard and fulfilled his wife's last
wish.
When Albert died Irmgard inherited his fortune. Irmgard then visited her relatives in
Germany, including the Schumann family. This is the "Africa Irmgard" mentioned in the
Karl-Wilhelm Schumann and Liselotte Anthes biographies, who invited them on a luxurious
tour of Europe in her Packard with red leather upholstery,

Rosine Maria Rösslerin was born 1783 in Stolzenhain, Germany and died on the 5th of
February 1827 in Zeitz, Germany of Mütterkrankheit, which meant childbirth fever.
She was the daughter of Johann Christian Rößler. Rösslerin is the feminine form of the
name Rößler. According to her death certificate Rosine Maria Rösslerin was survived
by her husband and four unnamed children. Her husband survived her by only two
months and ten days. The four children were named as survivors of her husband in his

and three daughters. Only the names of the second eldest daughter Caroline and a son
